Guadua guzmanii (Poaceae: Bambusoideae: Bambuseae: Guaduinae): a new woody bamboo species endemic to Jalisco, Mexico

Guadua comprises 35 described species, seven of which are distributed in Mexico. Since 1976, a specimen corresponding to the genus Guadua was collected, which could not be correctly assigned to any described taxon. In the present study, a new species of Guadua endemic to the state of Jalisco is described based on vegetative characters. Herbarium specimens were reviewed, field collections made, and specialist literature consulted. A comparison with similar specimens was conducted. The degree of threat was determined following the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Guadua guzmanii, endemic to the El Tamarindo peninsula, municipality of La Huerta, Jalisco, is described. We include a morphological key for the species of the genus Guadua in Mexico, an illustration, photographs, and a distribution map. According to the IUCN criteria, the species is classified as Critically Endangered due to its restricted geographical distribution. With the description of Guadua guzmanii, the number of native Guadua species in Mexico increases to eight. Additionally, the number of woody bamboos in Mexico increases to 60, with 43 species endemic to Mexico and four endemic to Jalisco, included: Chusquea contrerasii, Chusquea guzmanii, Rhipidocladum singuliflorum and Guadua guzamnii.

Harnessing the Cross-Neutralisation Potential of Existing Antivenoms for Mitigating the Outcomes of Snakebite in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Over 32,000 individuals succumb to snake envenoming in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA) annually. This results from several factors, including a lack of antivenom products capable of neutralising the venoms of diverse snake species in this region. Most manufacturers produce polyvalent antivenoms targeting 3 to 16 clinically important snake species in sSA. However, specific products are unavailable for many others, especially those with a restricted geographic distribution. While next-generation antivenoms, comprising a cocktail of broadly neutralising antibodies, may offer an effective solution to this problem, given the need for their clinical validation, recombinant antivenoms are far from being available to snakebite victims. One of the strategies that could immediately address this issue involves harnessing the cross-neutralisation potential of existing products. Therefore, we assessed the neutralisation potency of PANAF-Premium antivenom towards the venoms of 14 medically important snakes from 13 countries across sSA for which specific antivenom products are unavailable. Preclinical assays in a murine model of snake envenoming revealed that the venoms of most snake species under investigation were effectively neutralised by this antivenom. Thus, this finding highlights the potential use of PANAF-Premium antivenom in treating bites from diverse snakes across sSA and the utility of harnessing the cross-neutralisation potential of antivenoms.

Impact of Quaternary Amazonian river dynamics on the diversification of uakari monkeys (genus Cacajao)

AbstractAimThe central and western Amazonia underwent several landscape changes during the Quaternary. Whereas the Riverine Barrier Hypothesis is traditionally used to explain the influence of rivers on speciation, processes such as river rearrangements have been overlooked to explain the geographic distribution and evolutionary history of Amazonia biota. Here, we tested how river rearrangements influenced the evolutionary history of uakari monkeys, genus Cacajao, a primate genus primarily associated with seasonally flooded forests in central and western Amazonia.LocationCentral and Western Amazonia.TaxonThe genus Cacajao, including the black uakaris (C. melanocephalus, C. ayresi, C. hosomi); and the bald‐headed uakaris (C. calvus, C. amuna, C. rubicundus, C. ucayalii, C. novaesi).MethodsWe performed a continuous phylogeographic analysis using 77 cytochrome b sequences to identify the origin and dispersal of Cacajao lineages. We used genome‐wide SNP variation (ddRADseq) to investigate population structure, gene flow and demographic history in Cacajao populations and used digital elevation models to identify landscape and riverscape characteristics that may have influenced the geographic distribution of Cacajao.ResultsOur continuous phylogeographic reconstruction pointed out that the ancestral Cacajao lineage occupied the flooded forests of the Solimões River, in central Amazonia, at ~1.7 Mya and descendant lineages dispersed throughout central and western Amazonia more recently. We identified gene flow in both black and bald‐headed uakari populations, even across rivers considered barriers (e.g. the Negro River). Landscape analysis showed that river rearrangements influenced the geographic distribution and population structure in Cacajao. Historical demographic analyses suggest varied scenarios of population size changes among Cacajao monkeys consistent with periods of intense dynamism in flooded habitats and the formation of non‐flooded upland forests.Main ConclusionOur results support that the river rearrangements have shaped the geographic distribution and divergence of recently diverged Cacajao lineages. Landscape and riverscape changes, along with retractions of the flooded forests, isolated some Cacajao populations in floodplain areas. Our study also suggests that these events led to the recent changes in demographic histories in species with a restricted geographic distribution.

Rediscovery of the Neotropical orchid Porroglossum parsonsii and recommendations for its conservation

Abstract Understanding the distribution and habitat requirements of species is crucial for designing conservation actions, yet this information is not available for many plant species. We report the first confirmed wild populations of Porroglossum parsonsii, which, because of its horticultural value, is commercialized in national and international markets, from where it was first described to science. Our large-scale survey of 341 10 × 30 m plots spanning Andean forests, paramo habitats and pasturelands in Colombia suggests that P. parsonsii has a restricted geographical distribution in Andean forests with high forest cover (71.4–86.2%), where it occurs in low numbers (5–17 individuals per plot). Because of its market value (USD 18–20 per plant) there is a risk the species could be collected illegally, and therefore the habitat of the species in the Santuario de Fauna y Flora de Iguaque requires appropriate conservation.

Three new species in Russula subsection Xerampelinae supported by genealogical and phenotypic coherence

ABSTRACT Xerampelinae is a subsection composed of species of ectomycorrhizal fungi belonging to the hyperdiverse and cosmopolitan genus Russula (Russulales). Species of Xerampelinae are recognized by their fishy or shrimp odor, browning context, and a green reaction to iron sulfate. However, species delimitation has traditionally relied on morphology and analysis of limited molecular data. Prior taxonomic work in Xerampelinae has led to the description of as many as 59 taxa in Europe and 19 in North America. Here we provide the first multilocus phylogeny of European and North American members based on two nrDNA loci and two protein-coding genes. The resulting phylogeny supports the recognition of 17 species-rank Xerampelinae clades; however, higher species richness (~23) is suggested by a more inclusive nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer region ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 (ITS barcode) analysis. Phylogenetic and morphological analyses support three new species with restricted geographic distributions: R. lapponica, R. neopascua, and R. olympiana. We confirm that the European species R. subrubens is present in North America and the North American species R. serissima (previously known as R. favrei) is present in Europe. Most other Xerampelinae appear restricted to either North America or Eurasia, which indicates a high degree of regional endemism; this includes R. xerampelina, a name widely applied to North American taxa, but a species restricted to Eurasia.

A systematic review and disability-adjusted life years of Scedosporium/Lomentospora infection in patients after near-drowning.

Scedosporium/Lomentospora species exist as saprophytic moulds that can potentially lead to serious infections in patients who have experienced near-drowning incidents. Scedosporium species are distributed across different regions of the world while Lomentospora prolificans has quite a restricted geographic distribution. We aimed to systematically review scedosporiosis cases after near-drowning, their clinical manifestations, underlying diseases, treatments, outcomes and its impact through disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Five available sources were searched from 1 January 2007, to 20 April 2022. Thirty-eight studies, including 41 patients, were evaluated. Mean age was 33.6 ± 18.6 years (range 1-68), and 28 were male (68.3%). Central nervous system (CNS) dissemination predominated (36/41; 87.8%), presenting mainly as multiple brain abscesses (26/41; 63.4%), followed by lung involvement (22/41; 56.4%). Scedosporium apiospermum species complex was the most causative agent (38/41; 92.7%). Overall mortality was 51.2%. Half of the patients (18/37) were cured after receiving proper treatment, and in most cases, voriconazole alone or in combination with surgery or other antifungals caused survival. The mean survival time was 123 ± 27 days. Mean DALYs in 1980-2022 were 46.110 ± 3.318 (39.607-52.612). Time to diagnosis was estimated to be 120 days, and there was no association between time to diagnosis and outcome. Voriconazole is a potentially effective therapy, and combination of surgery and antifungal treatment may lead to more favourable outcome. Advances in early diagnosis and appropriate antifungal therapy may have contributed to reducing its mortality.

The first USA continental record of coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix) on coffee (Coffea arabica) in southwest Florida, USA.

Coffee leaf rust (CLR), caused by Hemileia vastatrix Berk. & Broome (Zaghouaniaceae) is considered the most significant fungal disease of Coffea arabica L. (Rubiaceae), from which berries are harvested and processed to obtain coffee beverage (Talhinhas et al. 2017). In Florida, coffee plants are mainly used as ornamentals due to their fragrant flowers; however, there are ongoing field trials evaluating the adaptability of plants for coffee production to climate conditions in the state (Crane et al. 2005). In November 2021, young seedlings of C. arabica var. caturra from a residence in Naples (Collier County) in southwest Florida were discovered with signs of rust fungus. Minute, yellow, suprastomatal sori 53-81 µm in diam were formed on the abaxial leaf surface, forming blotches. Light-yellow urediniospores measured 29-31 × 20-29 µm, with a reniform or "hunchbacked" shape, had thick walls measuring 1.5-2.5 µm in height, and were dorsally echinulate, the individual spikes measuring 2.5-3.3 µm in height. Spikes were scattered over most of the dorsal surface and form a dense ridge separating the dorsal from the smooth ventral side. (e-Xtra Fig. 1). Symptoms and signs are consistent with published descriptions of CLR produced by H. vastatrix (Ritschel 2005). To confirm the identification, DNA sequencing of the large subunit (LSU) of the ribosomal repeat was done following the protocols of Aime (2006) (GenBank accession number OR296753-OR296754). The Florida specimen shares 100% sequence identity (887/728 bp) with other accessions of H. vastatrix in congruence with maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis performed in RAxMLv8.0.0 (Stamatakis 2014) (e-Xtra Fig. 2). In addition to CLR, Hemileia coffeicola Maubl. & Roger, causal agent of powdery rust of coffee, produces similar leaf spots on coffee but has a restricted geographical distribution. This agent is found only above 500 m a.s.l. in central Africa (Silva et al. 2006) and produces larger urediniospores (34-40 × 20-28 µm) (Maublanc & Roger 1934) in sori are scattered in abaxial leaf surface giving a powdery appearance. Hemileia vastatrix has been reported from almost every major coffee growing country of the world as well as Hawaii and Puerto Rico (Keith et al. 2022, Ramirez-Camejo et al., 2022). This is the first report of CLR in the continental USA, however, CLR poses a limited threat to the USA agriculture in view of the fact coffee is not commercially grown within the continental USA. A voucher was made of dried symptomatic leaves and deposited at Plant Industry Gainesville Herbarium (PIHG 15712, 16332) and the Arthur Fungarium at Purdue University (PUR N23473). The remaining infested coffee seedlings were destroyed after phytopathological diagnosis, and the pathogen has been absent from all additional screenings since November 2021.

Environmental and geographic low suitability overlapping of geoduck clams in the Pacific Northeast predicted by Ecological Niche Modeling

The known distribution limits of geoduck clams (genus Panopea) remain geographically separated globally. However, in the northeast Pacific, P. generosa is distributed from Alaska to northern Mexico, but approaches, and likely overlaps, the distribution of P. globosa, which is mainly distributed in the Gulf of California. There is incipient evidence that both populations coexist in the central part of the Baja California Peninsula on the Pacific coast. However, knowledge of the biogeographic distribution and environmental conditions for both species is still developing. To address the hypothesis of coexistence in the same geographic space, we developed distribution area models using ecological niche modeling through the maximum entropy algorithm. The algorithm used presence-only records and environmental layers (predictive variables) such as mean surface temperature, mean salinity, mean depth, temperature range, and primary productivity. The results indicate that both species overlap in a narrow portion of the environmental space (Grinnellian ecological niche), which is reflected in a restricted geographic distribution with conditions of low abiotic suitability. Our results contribute to directing new research in the areas of ecology, biogeography, paleontology, and geoduck clam fisheries management.

Pleistocene climatic oscillations influenced the emergence of geographically widespread and restricted genetic lineages in an Andean grasshopper species group

Abstract The grasshopper Trimerotropis pallidipennis species complex is distributed across arid and semi-arid environments from North to South America, reaching high altitudes along the Andes Mountain range. Currently, there are four valid species of Trimerotropis in South America. However, some species were found to comprise several genetic lineages. Here, we describe the genetic structure, lineage diversification, and environmental requirements within the Trimerotropis species complex in South America based on sequences from the mitochondrial COI gene, 4048 single nucleotide polymorphisms, and ecological niche modelling. The analyses revealed the existence of at least five lineages: two with a restricted geographical distribution and three with a very wide one. The results provide evidence that glacial cycles promoted not only the presence of refuge areas but also the isolation of widely distributed lineages on the eastern and western sides of the southern Andes, potentially driving the emergence of the Trimerotropis sp. lineage, which can tolerate more temperate habitats. Our results provide evidence for the effects of Pleistocene climatic changes on the diversification history of a South American grasshopper species complex.

Molecular species delimitation of marine trematodes over wide geographical ranges: Schikhobalotrema spp. (Digenea: Haplosplanchnidae) in needlefishes (Belonidae) from the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.

Geographical distribution plays a major role in our understanding of marine biodiversity. Some marine fish trematodes have been shown to have highly restricted geographical distributions, while some are known to occur over very wide ranges; however, very few of these wide distributions have been demonstrated genetically. Here, we analyse species of the genus Schikhobalotrema (Haplosplanchnidae) parasitizing beloniforms from the tropical west Pacific, the eastern Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). We test the boundaries of these trematodes by integrating molecular and morphological data, host association, habitat of the hosts and geographical distribution, following a recently proposed and standardized delineation method for the recognition of marine trematode species. Based on the new collections, Schikhobalotrema huffmani is here synonymized with the type-species of the genus, Schikhobalotrema acutum; Sch. acutum is now considered to be widely distributed, from the GoM to the western Pacific. Additionally, we describe a new species, Schikhobalotrema minutum n. sp., from Strongylura notata and Strongylura marina (Belonidae) from La Carbonera coastal lagoon, northern Yucatán, GoM. We briefly discuss the role of host association and historical biogeography of the hosts as drivers of species diversification of Schikhobalotrema infecting beloniforms.

A new small carder bee species from the eastern Canary Islands (Hymenoptera, Megachilidae, Anthidiini)

Recent field surveys in the eastern Canary Islands (Spain), followed by contributions of new occurrence records through the citizen science platform iNaturalist.com and the social media photo repository Flickr.com have revealed the presence of an overlooked small carder bee species (genus Pseudoanthidium Friese (Megachilidae: Anthidiini)) on the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Here, we combined morphology, DNA barcodes (mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, COI) and ecological data (distribution, altitudinal ranges and environmental niche classification) to describe this species as Pseudoanthidium (Pseudoanthidium) jacobiisp. nov. We provide an illustrated description along with diagnostic morphological characters to separate it from P. (P.) canariense (Mavromoustakis, 1954), the only other congeneric species known from the neighbouring islands of La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria and from which it is separated by a genetic distance of 2.7%. We also evaluated the extent of shared environmental niche space among the two Pseudoanthidium species, and our results show a significant difference in elevation range as well as a very small (less than 1%) overlap between the modelled climatic niche of P. jacobii and that of P. canariense. Given the extremely restricted geographic distribution and the fragile and isolated nature of the habitat and host plants of this new island endemic species, we assign it an IUCN conservation status of “EN” (endangered) and discuss avenues for future research on the ecology and conservation of wild bees in the Canary Islands and neighbouring regions.

Tardigrade Augean stables—a challenging phylogeny and taxonomy of the family Ramazzottiidae (Eutardigrada: Hypsibioidea)

Abstract Tardigrade taxonomy is most often hindered by prevalent outdated species descriptions, lack of integrative redescriptions, scarce genetic information, and fragmentary sampling. Here, we diagnose the problems obscuring phylogenetic inference and the taxonomy of the cosmopolitan family Ramazzottiidae. We carried out the most extensive phylogenetic analysis of this family to date, with a considerable influx of new genetic data from poorly sampled regions of the world. We found two new distinct evolutionary lineages defined by distinct morphological traits (dorsal cuticular sculpturing and/or body shape), characterized by restricted geographic distributions, and we delineated them as new species complexes: the Neotropical Ramazzottius baumanni complex and the Afro-Oriental Ramazzottius szeptyckii complex. Nevertheless, we could not confidently ascertain the taxonomic status of both complexes due to: (i) the current state of the ramazzottiid taxonomy, with outdated and/or imprecise species descriptions with heterogeneous terminology and, in many cases, without accounting for intraspecific variation; (ii) the missing genetic information for key taxa; and (iii) the possible lack of monophyly of Cryoconicus and Ramazzottius as suggested by our results. In addition to diagnosing the problems of ramazzottiid phylogeny and systematics, we also propose possible solutions that could accelerate the progress in our understanding of the evolution of this group.

Molecular evidence to support the transfer of Enteromorpha ovata to genus Ulva and evaluate its divergence using multi‐locus time‐calibrated phylogeny

Ulva has received considerable attention since its merger with tubular Enteromorpha (Linnaeus) Nees based on molecular evidence. Nevertheless, several nomenclatural and taxonomic proposals concerning tropical and subtropical species are still pending in want of investigations based on the altered circumscription and criteria of genetic diversity. Enteromorpha ovata Thivy et Visalakshmi ex H. Joshi et V. Krishnamurthy has a restricted geographical distribution only at Gopnath, India. In the present study, we for the first time provide a polyphasic approach to ascertain its taxonomic position, using morpho‐anatomy, ecology and molecular taxonomy with multigene markers (rbcL, tufA and ITS rDNA). Phylogenetic analysis based on rbcL, tufA and ITS rDNA gene sequences supported the recognition of this species within the genus Ulva. The recent revision by Kumar and Palanisamy proposed the new nomenclatural combinaton Ulva ovata (Thivy et Visalakshmi ex Joshi et Krishnamurthy) Aron Santhosh Kumar and Palanisamy, but they did not give molecular evidence while doing so, which we accomplished. Our time‐calibrated phylogeny suggested that U. ovata diverged from its respective sister lineages ~ 4.46 Mya in the Neogene period of the Cenozoic Era.

Assessing the vulnerability of endangered and endemic brooding sea urchin Cassidulus mitis in response to climate change: Impacts on larvae and settlers in the southwestern Atlantic

Echinoderms play important roles in marine ecosystems and exhibit high sensitivity to environmental changes. The echinoid Cassidulus mitis has been considered an endangered species due to its restricted geographic distribution and unique reproductive behavior, with an epibenthic lecithotrophic larva and offspring brooded among the female spines during initial development until the settler stage. We studied the effects of low salinities (30 and 26) and high temperatures (27 and 31 °C) on the early development of C. mitis in a predicted scenario of global climate change through four parameters: 1. survival and 2. chronology of larval development, and 3. survival and 4. growth of settlers. Both larvae and settlers of C. mitis can survive under these scenarios, probably due to the lecithotrophic and epibenthic larval characteristics and developmental strategies of this species. However, all experimental conditions affected at least one of the initial developmental studied parameters of C. mitis, potentially compromising the species' viability in a scenario of climate change.

A new species of Iochroma Benth. (Solanaceae) from the eastern Andes of Colombia.

Iochromaorozcoae A.Orejuela & S.D.Sm., sp. nov. (Solanaceae) is described from the Andean forests of Cundinamarca in the eastern cordillera of Colombia. Iochromaorozcoae was first collected by the eminent Spanish priest and botanist José Celestino Mutis in the late part of the 18th century, but the specimens have lain unrecognised in herbaria for over 200 years. The species shares many features with its closest relative, Iochromabaumii S.D.Sm. & S.Leiva, but it differs from it in having small flowers with five corolla lobes and few inflorescences per branch, located near the shoot apex with 1 to 4 (-8) flowers, fruits that are greenish-yellow when ripe and its restricted geographic distribution. A description of I.orozcoae is provided, along with a detailed illustration, photographs of live plants, a comparison with closely-related species and a key to all Colombian species of Iochroma Benth. In closing, we emphasise the value of historical collections for the knowledge of biodiversity.

Eriocaulaceae: A new classification system based on morphological evolution and molecular evidence

AbstractPaepalanthus, in its current sense, is the most diverse genus of Eriocaulaceae in the Neotropics, comprising about 400 species. Previous studies have consistently found that the genus is not monophyletic, also being morphologically heterogeneous and diagnosable by a set of homoplasies; thus, the current circumscription needs to be revised. The new classification proposed here uses a comprehensive phylogeny of Paepalanthus and closely related genera as a framework and an evaluation of a set of morphological characters using ancestral state reconstruction, which allowed the recognition of strongly supported clades with morphological diagnosability. We propose the recognition of 12 genera in the clade encompassing Paepalanthus and allied groups, including six new genera (Coracoralina, Floralia, Giuliettia, Gnomus, Hydriade, Nisius), two new statuses (Cryptanthella, Monosperma), the reestablishment of Actinocephalus, Lachnocaulon, and Tonina, and a recircumscription of Paepalanthus. In this new circumscription, Paepalanthus comprises 257 species, most of them restricted to the Brazilian campos rupestres. Among the proposed genera, nine have potential morphological synapomorphies, one has a restricted geographical distribution, and the other two can be recognized by a combination of characters. Newly generated seed morphology data is consistent within the different genera and plays an important role in their recognition. A total of 136 new combinations are hereby proposed. We provide a genus‐level identification key, as well as generic descriptions, diagnostic features, photos illustrating their morphological diversity, maps and notes on distribution, and lists of species by genus.

The Habitat Map of Switzerland: A Remote Sensing, Composite Approach for a High Spatial and Thematic Resolution Product

Habitat maps at high thematic and spatial resolution and broad extents are fundamental tools for biodiversity conservation, the planning of ecological networks and the management of ecosystem services. To derive a habitat map for Switzerland, we used a composite methodology bringing together the best available spatial data and distribution models. The approach relies on the segmentation and classification of high spatial resolution (1 m) aerial imagery. Land cover data, as well as habitat and species distribution models built on Earth observation data from Sentinel 1 and 2, Landsat, Planetscope and LiDAR, inform the rule-based classification to habitats defined by the hierarchical Swiss Habitat Typology (TypoCH). A total of 84 habitats in 32 groups and 9 overarching classes are mapped in a spatially explicit manner across Switzerland. Validation and plausibility analysis with four independent datasets show that the mapping is broadly plausible, with good accuracy for most habitats, although with lower performance for fine-scale and linear habitats, habitats with restricted geographical distributions and those predominantly characterised by understorey species, especially forest habitats. The resulting map is a vector dataset available for interactive viewing and download from open EnviDat data sharing platform. The methodology is semi-automated to allow for updates over time.

Molecular Characterization of Thymus capitellatus Extracts and Their Antioxidant, Neuroprotective and Anti-Proliferative Activities

Thymus capitellatus Hoffmanns & Link is an endemic species of the Iberian Peninsula listed as near-threatened, due to its restricted geographical distribution, occurring mainly in Portugal's mainland. In this work, we detail for the first time T. capitellatus extracts' phytochemical composition, as well as an evaluation of bioactivities to point out potential health benefits. Aqueous decoction (AD) and hydroethanolic (HE) extracts were obtained, both rich in flavonoids. However, quercetin-(?)-O-hexoside was identified as the main compound in T. capitellatus HE extract, while the phenolic acid rosmarinic acid was the main component of AD extracts. In addition, HE extract presents significant amounts of salvianolic acids and of the terpenoids oleanolic and ursolic acid. Both extracts showed antioxidant activity, evaluated by their capacity to scavenge ABTS and superoxide radicals, as well as an ability to prevent lipid peroxidation. AD extracts were also effective in scavenging hydroxyl and nitric oxide radicals. As potential functional foods, T. capitellatus extracts presented neuroprotective and anti-diabetic activity, in addition to time- and dose-dependent anti-proliferative activity against Caco-2 (colorectal adenocarcinoma) and HepG2 (hepatic carcinoma) cells. HE extract presented higher cytotoxicity than AD extract, and HepG2 cells were more resistant than Caco-2 cells. After 24 h exposure to HE extract, the IC50 values were 330 μg/mL and 447 μg/mL for Caco-2 and HepG2 cells, respectively. T. capitellatus has potential as a functional food or as a source of bioactive molecules. These results also highlight the need to preserve species with as yet unknown molecular compositions and potential medicinal applications.

A New Species of Brachycephalus (Anura, Brachycephalidae) from a Montane Atlantic Rainforest of Southeastern Brazil, with a Reappraisal of the Species Groups in the Genus

Toadlets of the genus Brachycephalus are endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest, where they inhabit the forest floor leaf litter. These miniaturized frogs are commonly known as flea-toads or pumpkin toadlets depending on their phenotypic characteristics. Herein, we describe a new species of the genus Brachycephalus from montane forests (970–1200 m a.s.l.) in the Serra dos Órgãos mountain range, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. The new species is characterized by having a small body size within the genus (maximum SVL 9.6 mm in males and 10.9 mm in females), a noticeably granular dorsum with an X-shaped mark and a median row of small yellow tubercles, a yellow background color with red blotches on ventral surfaces, a lateral dark brown stripe, and the absence of hyperossification in the skeleton. Morphological features of the new taxon resemble those of both flea-toads and pumpkin toadlets. Based on our molecular phylogenetic hypothesis, the new species is recovered sister to the clade formed by the monophyletic B. ephippium and B. vertebralis species groups (previously considered as lineages of a more inclusive B. ephippium group). We also reinforce the suggestion of not using the name B. didactylus group because it does not represent a monophyletic taxon. The new species probably has an extremely restricted geographic distribution, and its discovery reinforces the importance of the Serra dos Órgãos mountains for the conservation of the Atlantic Rainforest anuran biodiversity.

Biogeography, Speciation and Taxonomy within the genus Bactrocera Macquart with application to the Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) complex of fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae: Dacinae)

The genus Bactrocera Macquart comprises a large group of some 750 species distributed across the Asia-Pacific and Afrotropical regions. Most of these have been described and revised by Drew (1989), Drew & Hancock (1994) and Drew & Romig (2013, 2022). A taxonomic study of such a large and diverse group of species provides valuable information that can be used in the elucidation of concepts on biogeography and evolution that are presented in this paper. While a wider discussion of this genus and its many complexes of sibling species awaits a future publication, in this paper we discuss the Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) complex in light of current knowledge of biogeography and evolution in the Asia-Pacific region. Within the dorsalis complex, 70 species were recognized in South-East Asia by Drew & Romig (2013) and eight listed for Papua New Guinea and Australia by Drew (1989). Seventy-nine species are now included in this paper. Within this complex, two major groups occur, one with species responding to methyl eugenol and the other to cue lure. The 34 non-cue lure responding group of species are discussed, most of which respond to methyl eugenol and seven of which are recognized as having pest status, namely, B. carambolae Drew & Hancock, B. caryeae (Kapoor), B. dorsalis (Hendel), B. kandiensis Drew & Hancock, B. occipitalis (Bezzi), B. ochroma Drew & Romig and B. papayae Drew & Hancock. An eighth species, Bactrocera invadens Drew, Tsuruta & White is included in this discussion on the basis of its molecular similarity to B. dorsalis. The remaining group of 45 species, mostly cue lure-responding and including the pest species B. pyrifoliae Drew & Hancock and B. syzygii White & Tsuruta, are also discussed. Morphological and ecological data are presented for each pest species and their biosecurity risks assessed. In addition, new data based on further research on the male aedeagus have demonstrated that B. carambolae, B. occipitalis, B. papayae and B. invadens are markedly different from B. dorsalis in the dimensions and shape of the glans and preglans appendix. Based on this evidence, and that presented by Drew & Romig (2016), the withdrawal of B. papayae and B. invadens from synonymy with B. dorsalis by Drew & Romig (2016) remains valid, while the similarity in aedeagus characters between B. papayae and B. philippinensis further supports the synonymisation of these two species. The remainder of the 34 non-cue lure responding species are distributed from the Indian subcontinent, across South-East Asia, Papua New Guinea and north-eastern Australia, some with restricted geographic distributions and specific host plant species. Comments on the reliability of molecular phylogenies in the Dacini are included, with the published mitogenome of 'Dacus longicornis' regarded, on morphological evidence, as data based on a misidentification of Dacus (Mellesis) polistiformis (Senior-White), and the recent synonymy of B. albistrigata (de Meijere) with B. frauenfeldi (Schiner) considered to be based on insufficient evidence.
